Thomas shines at COCAA
MONTEGO BAY, St James — FROME Technical’s Daniel Thomas won three events at the County of Cornwall Field, Distance and Hurdles meet at Cornwall College, on Saturday.
Thomas won the Class Two discus – 32.56m, the shot put Open – 9.45m and the javelin Open – 30.61m.
All the distances were ‘A’ qualifying standards for Girls Champs, which is scheduled for March.
It was a good meet for Frome Technical who also won three of the four relays contested, including the girls’ 4x400m and Sprint Medley Relays (SMR).
In the girls’ SMR, the team of Derrian Hill, Cassandra Wright, Chantel Hutchinson and Kimberly McLeod returned a time of 4 minutes 32.4 seconds to beat Herbert Morrison, while the Mile Relay team that included Class 2 800m winner Ruschell Clayton and anchored by Class 2 1500m champion Stephanie Barrett, won in 4 minutes 10.0 seconds, ahead of Irwin High.
Barrett ran solo to win the 1500m in 5 minutes 17.6 seconds in her first year in Class 2, while Clayton — a 200m/400m specialist — won the 800m in 2 minutes 25.4 seconds ahead of Irwin’s Renae Ambursley — 2 minutes 26.3 seconds.
In the boys SMR, the team of Ricardo McIntosh, Kirk McIntosh, Elroy Brown and Janoi Distin overtook a fast-starting Rusea’s High team to win in 3 minutes 51.1 seconds, while Petersfield High won the 4x400m in 3 minutes 26.9 seconds.
In the boys’ section, Cornwall College’s Sean Haughton won the 400m hurdles Open with 57.9 seconds, beating Herbert Morrison’s Fitzroy Harris – 59.3 seconds; Petersfield’s Oshane Turner won the Class 2 800m in 2 minutes 02.1 seconds, beating Balaclava’s Jerome Peart – 2 minutes 06.4 seconds.
Despite the absence of defending Western Champions Munro College boys and St Elizabeth Technical girls, 18 schools from the county took part in the meet.
