Memorable Concert Moments
Arnella Chin
Mariah Carey in Toronto… my absolutely favourite singer.
Xavier Chin — Pavarotti at King’s House.
Roma Chin — Michael Jackson and The Rolling Stones in Miami at the stadium.
William Mahfood — Newport Beach, Rhode Island in 1984: I was lying on the beach as I listened to the sounds of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
Douglas Gordon
Usher in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
Tara Playfair
Definitely the This Day Music Festival held in Lagos, Nigeria in 2008.
Donahue Jarrett
Sting in London, England.
DJ Bambino
I saw rapper Rob Base in Tampa, Florida singing I wanna rock right now, and his DJ EZ Rock was tearing up the turntables. Milli Vanilli closed the show. It was the first concert I ever went to in the United States and was truly unforgettable.
Ce’Cile
It was March last year; I opened for German superstar Peter Fox at the Lanxess Arena (formerly known as Kolnarena; it’s Germany’s largest indoor concert venue) in front of 16,000 people. It was awesome.
Financier Kim Edwards
Lionel Richie at Sumfest performing every song with each sounding like it was cut off the original track. It was amazing! That and his impeccable white styling.
Kingsley Cooper
I am somewhat conflicted as regards my most memorable concert moment. Interestingly, the two that I found most mesmerising were both Pulse productions, but that is not why they moved me so much.
It was the riveting performance of the incomparable Peter Tosh at his last ever concert performance in 1983 at Superjam as well as the artistry and mastery of the Commodores in 1981, even as they performed without Lionel Richie the group having split while on tour, just a day before their concert in Jamaica.
Both performances were spellbinding, awe-inspiring and are spoken of to this day. The concerts were special as the Commodores were the #1 pop group in the world at the time and Peter Tosh was coming off his most successful world tour, which he ended in Kingston. His biggest ever hit Johnny Be Good topped the charts that year. The Commodores had also had a phenomenal year when they performed in Jamaica with Richie having the worldwide number one hit Endless Love, a duet with Diana Ross.
It’s a definite toss-up between those two performances for me.
Odessa Chambers
OMG! There are so many, but I’d have to say my most memorable concert experience was Michael Jackson’s Bad Tour at Wembley Stadium. I went with my brother Adonis and it was just mind-blowing to see him so close, a truly magical show. There is too, my two-hour experience with Stevie Wonder — also at Wembley — on his birthday… the stage was in a round and shaped like Africa.
Timberlee Heaven
Fully Loaded 1999 when Tony Matterhorn and Fire Links clashed… the show was crazy even though I don’t know who won. But it was eye-opening for me, that’s when I realised that dancehall songs are a language through which selectors communicate.
Alaine
Seeing Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliot and Tamia at a New Jersey show back in 2004. It was incredible! I remember how amazing Beyoncé was: the lights, the costume changes, her voice. She was perfection personified. Alicia Keys was out of this world; she climbed on top of her grand piano, laid down and played the piano by lifting her hand over her head while upside down.
Chris Blackwell
Bob Marley at the Lyceum when he sang No Woman No Cry. The whole audience joined in, we recorded the concert and that version became one of his biggest hits.
Tina Myers
December 9, 2009 — John Legend in concert at a private wine, food and music pairing at Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak. What made this concert truly memorable was the fact that John Legend called me by name and wished me a Happy Birthday.
Christopher Issa
My most memorable concert moment has got to be seeing Bob Marley in concert at the University of Chicago where I was a student, for the very first time.
