Austin, Ottley steer CCC to victory over Guyana
CAVE HILL, Barbados (CMC) — Off-spinner Ryan Austin claimed a career-best seven for 42 and debutant Kjorn Ottley hit an accomplished 66 as Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) scored a come-from-behind five-wicket victory over Guyana late on the third day of their WICB Regional First-class match at Three Ws Oval yesterday.
The 28-year-old Austin ripped through the Guyana’s second innings as the visitors, well placed overnight on 60 for one, collapsed to 162 all out.
The hosts, set 195 to win, were paced to full points by the left-handed Ottley, who struck 11 fours off 106 balls.
The 20-year-old got sound assistance from opener Omar Phillips (35) and Chadwick Walton (34 not out). Austin earned the Man of the Match award with match figures of 10 for 118, his first ten-wicket haul at this level. It was pacer Kevin McClean who rocked Guyana early as Chris Barnwell miscued a pull to midwicket in the day’s third over at 68 for two.
Austin, bowling with beautiful control and generating generous turn and bounce, made his mark with the key scalps of captain Sewnarine Chattergoon and first innings topscorer Royston Crandon in successive overs.
Chattergoon, who topscored with 39, edged a half-cocked defensive prod to slip while Crandon chipped a simple return catch. When Khismar Catlin gained a fortunate decision against Assad Fudadin to a leg side deflection, the CCC were well on top at 80 for five.
In another game, the experienced Wilden Cornwall and Omari Banks linked up for eight wickets yesterday and placed the Leeward Islands in position for a victory against Trinidad and Tobago in their match at that is poised for a tight finish today.
After three days play in the low scoring encounter at Foursquare Oval, the match is delicately balanced and the Leewards — chasing 202 for an outright win — were 115 for five at stumps yesterday, 87 runs adrift of victory with half their batting intact.
