Cavalier must wait
CAVALIER FC’s title celebrations will have to be put on ice until Saturday after they threw away a first-half lead to finish 1-1 with Mountain View in their rescheduled Claro/KSAFA Super League match at Excelsior High School yesterday.
Phillip Riley put the title aspirants ahead after just 16 minutes, but Troyland Williams ensured a point for the home team when he converted from the penalty spot in the 59th minute.
However, Cavalier are virtually assured of the title as they are three points clear and 14 goals better than their nearest rivals, which means Santos FC would have to score 15 times at the weekend without conceding to overtake them.
Cavalier face Barbican in their final game at Barbican on Saturday and coach Lamar Hodges is expecting to finally seal the deal then. However, he was left lamenting his team’s missed chances yesterday.
“All season we have been getting goals and not finishing, but if we had put away the goals in the first half we would have come out winners,” he said.
“But I’m satisfied with the draw because at the end of the day, we did not lose,” he added.
After dominating the opening minutes of the contest, the visitors went in front when Riley finished off a good build-up after 16 minutes.
However, the home team came out with a lot of purpose in the second period and were always a threat.
They eventually pulled a goal back just before the hour when referee Donovan Muir awarded Rogel Shirley a penalty when he was fouled inside the area and Williams fired home the resulting kick to level the scores.
Donovan Alvanranga came close to winning the game for Cavalier, but his shot hit the crossbar and rebounded into play.
In the end, a draw was a fair result.
Mountain View’s coach Omar Stanley said his team’s display dispelled any notion that they would have given the game to Cavalier.
“There were a lot of rumours that we wanted to ‘throw’ the game, but we don’t like losing at home. We play at home with pride and we did not want Cavalier to celebrate on our home ground,” Stanley stated.
