No-show Leeds out of Super League
CHAPELTON, Clarendon — St Elizabeth team Leeds United became the first team to be relegated from the South Central Confederation Super League after failing to show for their weekend home match against Newland FC at Braes River.
This is the second time the promoted Leeds have failed to turn up for a game — the first being their final cross-zone fixture against Naggo Head FC on February 6.
While the Competitions Committee is yet to meet to decide the outcome of the game, in keeping with the regulations of the competition, Newlands are expected to be awarded full points.
And with Leeds fixed at the bottom of Group B with two points from 11 games and a goal difference of -23, it is impossible for them to haul themselves from the bottom four that will be automatically relegated at the end of the round.
They are 14 points adrift of Tafari Lions in the safe zone and can only tally 14 points with four games remaining in this the third and final round before the semi-finals.
The four teams with the least number of points at the end of the round will be demoted to their respective parish leagues.
In other games played at the weekend, another promoted team, Meadows FC, clipped Bodles FC 2-1 in their big St Catherine ‘derby’ at Bodles.
Ross Burton in the 20th minute and Kenroy White in the 42nd gave Meadows a 2-0 advantage at half-time, before Glenroy Levy grabbed Bodles’ consolation from the penalty spot in the 85th.
Meadows (30) have now extended their lead in Group B to 10 points and look set to cop one of the four semi-final spots.
Also on Saturday, relegation-threatened Original Hazard (10) turned in a workman-like performance to get by home team Wood Hall 2-1 in the Clarendon derby at the Turners Oval in Chapelton, but are still among the bottom two in Group A.
Demar Stone in the 22nd and Lionel Bennett in the 84th got the goals for Original Hazard, while Orville Williams replied for Wood Hall (nine) with a beauty in time added on.
At Cobbla on Sunday, 30th-minute strike by Andre Isaacs carried Monymusk FC (20) to a 1-0 win over Hillstars (eight) in Group B.
St Catherine’s Tru-Juice (22) maintained their lead in Group A, despite playing to a 0-0 scoreline with Downs FC (17) at Downs Community Centre.
The Naggo Head-Tafari Lions match was postponed to this Saturday, starting at 1:00 pm.
