JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee (CMC) — Jamaican Kimberly Smith sped to the sprint double and led a flurry of Caribbean winners at the National Association of Inter-collegiate Athletics (NAIA) Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend.

Smith repeated as 60 and 200-metre champion while her Jamaican colleagues Verone Chambers and Francine Simpson and the Bahamian Sean Pickstock also emerged champions at the three-day meet staged at East Tennessee State University.

In the women’s 60 metres, Smith, representing Wayland Baptiste University, logged a personal best 7.20 seconds and she recorded 24.17 seconds to land the 200 metres, each time defeating fellow Jamaican Gayon Evans.

“I had all the confidence that I could do it,” Smith said.

“I knew I just had to go out there and do my best. If I didn’t win I would have to accept it, but I am going out there to win and that is what I did,” she added.

Lindenwood’s Simpson was unchallenged in a women’s long jump triumph at 6.35 metres and Chambers dominated the women’s 400 metres in 56.27 seconds for Oklahoma Baptist.

Chambers also helped Oklahoma win the 1600-metre relay in three minutes, 44.94 seconds.

Dickinson State University’s Pickstock, who is representing the Bahamas at the IAAF World Indoor Championship in Qatar this weekend, easily took the men’s 400 in 47.56 seconds.

Pickstock’s success made it three consecutive years a Bahamian was winning the event, following back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2009 by the Olympian Ramon Miller.
