Cocktails With… Latoya Wright
Latoya Wright, Sagicor financial advisor and newly crowned Rookie of the Year, sits beaming on the barstool at Christopher’s Jazz Café, where she’s musing about her win, her obsession with forensic dramas and her plans for the future.
What are you sipping?
A lychee martini.
What do you love about Christopher’s?
My appreciation for this place is two-fold. It’s perfect for drinks ahead of hitting the dance floor upstairs and it’s also great that I can have business meetings here in the evenings.
Socialite or homebody?
Socialite.
So how does it feel to be awarded Sagicor Rookie of the Year?
It’s a good feeling; I get a lot of recognition and in my line of work that can go a long way… hopefully it means more business.
Did you always want to work in insurance?
No. I’m originally from Westmoreland and I came to Kingston to pursue a double major in accounts and management studies for which I earned first-class honours. I spent five years at a financial company as the head of its accounting unit during which time I pursued an MBA. I was approached to do insurance and I actually started in the field last March. So I’m quite proud that I’ve made ‘rookie’ in less than a calendar year.
Flats or stilettos?
It depends, for work stilettos definitely, but for casual occasions it’s flats.
What’s your style?
Business-chic.
What’s your essential style item?
Chapstick, I feel very uncomfortable without it.
What’s in your clutch?
Hand cream, my BlackBerry, my asthma inhaler, chewing gum
and lipgloss.
Who does your hair?
I do it myself… cut, colour and style.
Who does your nails?
Claudine’s Nail Shop off Constant Spring Road.
What perfume are you spraying?
I’m in love with Gucci Envy Me.
TV or good book?
Both… I love forensic stuff, so you’ll find me glued to CSI, Forensic Files and
Locked Up Aboard.
What’s your idea of the perfect date?
I’m a nature girl, so anything that involves the sunset, sitting on the beach and driving to the country.
What’s your idea of the perfect man?
Darren Virtue (boyfriend)… we share a lot of the same qualities in that we’re both ambitious and sociable. I like a man who is open, even if it means hearing something that will tear my heart out. I also like a man with personality and one who is sentimental as I, too, am the ‘mushy’ kind.
What’s in your car stereo?
Love souls, Air Supply especially; soca, alternative and dancehall, because that’s my culture.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
From my mum who once told me: “Do what your heart tells you to do, that’s the only way happiness comes.”
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m actually a certified mentor, so I’m taking care of a 13-year-old girl who lives in Mountain View, and building my client base.
And 10 years from now?
I want to own my own business. I also plan on going into real estate to develop rural areas and I would by that time be married with children. I also would love to be a more spiritual person.
