Mixed Martial Arts Champs on tomorrow
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Fighters started arriving in the island yesterday in time for this evening’s weighing in session leading to tomorrow night’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) championship tournament, dubbed King of the Rock here inside the Cornwall Room at the Half Moon Village.
The fight card, promoted by Twisted Kilt in association with Harley Davidson, Jamaica, will be highlighted by a five-championship fight card, headlined by a middleweight championship match-up between Jamaican-born Irish martial arts fighter Chris ‘Da Badman’ McDonald and Tobago’s Erland George.
The other championship bouts are: Trinidadian Dwayne ‘Puny’ Hinds against American Luke Taylor for the welterweight belt; American Doug Sparks versus Jamaican Jovan ‘The Barbarian’ Gayle for the light heavyweight championship title; Pete McDonald of Ireland against Jamaican Levar Gayle in the lightweight division; and Jamaican Andrew ‘Penna’ Rowe versus Trinidadian contender Keron Bourne for the vacant flyweight championship belt.
Meanwhile, in the first of two preliminary bouts, Jamaican Kaffain Williams will take on American Jeff ‘Doido’ Dabdoud in a middleweight encounter, followed by a match-up between two Jamaicans — Cleon Bardowell and Richie ‘Spartan’ Ennis in a welterweight battle.
According to promoters Anders Vestergaard and Andre Dixon, Saturday’s fight card is a culmination of a three-fight series, two of which were staged in August and November last year, at the same Montego Bay venue.
