Newton Sterling hopes to lift Cup for Arnett Gardens
After a return to struggling outfit Arnett Gardens FC during the January transfer window, Newton Sterling is aiming to lift this season’s Flow Champions Cup for the club which has never won the knockout.
The towering striker, who stands at 6′ 4″, was also on loan to Arnett Gardens last season and aided them in their campaign which took them from the dreaded relegation zone and landed them at fifth at the end of the season. He was not eligible last year to play for Arnett Gardens in the knockout.
“This is my second loan stint at Arnett Gardens, but the first in which I can play in the knockout, and I want to win the cup for the supporters as they make me feel at home here,” Sterling stated.
Nicknamed ‘Sterro’, Sterling has donned the jersey of many clubs, including Sogndal Fotball in Norway and Hapoel Jerusalem in Israel, GIF Sundsvall in Sweden and Charleston Battery in the US, along with premier league contenders Village United, Waterhouse and Portmore United, but he relishes the high expectations of the supporters at Arnett Gardens.
Interestingly, both Sterling and his current coach Wayne Fairclough have tasted victory in the Champions Cup before, lifting the trophy in the 2008 season at Waterhouse. This time around, though he wants to do it for Arnett Gardens.
“Knowing that Arnett has lost control of the Premier League, we’re going hard for the Flow Cup, the Flow Cup has this level of prestige now. The finals will be played at our home ground, so we’re looking forward to representing,” he reasoned.
A DaCosta Cup top goal scorer in the 2001-2 season (with 24 goals for St Thomas Technical) and former national representative with the senior team — Sterling is hungry to do well and to get back into the Reggae Boyz Squad.
“I need to get back into the frame for national duties since there is more of an emphasis on the local players. Hopefully I have a good run with the Champions Cup and gain the sort of form that will get me there,” he added.
This dream, though, is one which Sterling brushes aside as he prioritises for the duration of this season. “To be honest, for now, I have no personal dreams as all the players are just focused on Arnett Gardens lifting the Flow Cup on our home ground come April,” he said.
