Jamaica eyeing some 30 medals at Carifta Swim Champs

JAMAICA’S 36-member team will begin their hunt for top honours at the 25th staging of the Carifta Swimming Championships at the National Stadium Pool this morning at 9:00.

Led by Dominic Walter, Kendese Nangle, Victoria Ho and Lauren Williams, Jamaica are hoping for at least third place of the 13 countries participating in the four-day meet.

National coach Jackie Walter, having gone through the psych sheet, believes Jamaica can win 29 medals and is encouraging strong local support to cheer the team to victory.

“We have the chance to see top-class age-group swimming, the best in the region. The competition will be very close between Trinidad, The Bahamas, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Martinique,” Walter noted. “Many Caribbean Olympians start at the Carifta level,” she added.

Without adding pressure, Walter sees Kevaughn Campbell, Danielle Boothe, Timothy Wynter, along with Walter, Nangle, Ho and Williams to excel at the meet.

Jamaica will be strongest in the girls’ 15-17 age group of Nangle, Ho, Williams.

Jamaicans apart, regional swimmers likely to tear up the waters are McKayla Lightbourn of The Bahamas, Trinidadians Christian Homer, Cadell Lyons and Kimberly John Williams, and Siona Huxley of St Lucia.

Some 600 swimmers from Antigua, Aruba, The Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, US Virgin Islands, and hosts Jamaica will take part in the meet.
