Creditable showing by juniors in T&T tourney
Jamaica’s Girls 14 and Under tennis team finished fourth out of 15 countries, while the Boys team finished seventh out of 18 countries at the World Junior 14 & Under North American regional qualifying tournament in Port of Spain on Sunday.
The Jamaican Girls team of Nia Rose, Shaddae Findley, Michaelann Denton and non-playing captain Lisa Chin defeated Barbados and Trinidad, but lost to Guatemala in Group 3 round-robin action, thereby grabbing second spot in Group 3 and qualifying for the quarter-finals round-robin action.
The Jamaicans defeated Bermuda in the quarter-finals to advance to the semi-final, where they lost to Costa Rica and finished fourth overall and first in the English-speaking Caribbean.
Meanwhile, the boys team of Andrew Bicknell (11 years of age), Simon Levy, Dylan Levy and non-playing Captain Peter Berry found themselves in a tough group with Nicaragua and the highly-touted Puerto Ricans.
The Jamaicans defeated Nicaragua in a hard-fought encounter, but lost to Puerto Rico and were placed in a group which played-off for seventh to 12th positions.
The Jamaicans then went on a run, defeating Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba and Honduras to win the group and clinch seventh place.
Bicknell, one of the youngest player in the boys competition, finished with at 4-1 win-loss record playing at the No 1 position, while Simon Levy playing at No 2, also had four wins and one loss.
