‘One Night Only’
The recently revived, Mona-based UWI Pop Society is creating musical waves across the campus. After a hiatus, the group — consisting of talented musicians and singers — was revitalised at the beginning of the 2008-2009 academic semester and has been growing from strength to strength ever since.
On April 9th, they will be hosting a concert dubbed “One Night Only” in the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. This will certainly be a showcase to look out for judging by the prowess displayed by the group as they combined with the world-renowned creative arts director Michael Holgate and the University Dramatic Arts Society in a musical production called Glass Routes.
This production told the life story of “John John”, a Jamaican youth returning from England after the death of his father. While in Jamaica, he was taken on a journey to recapture his true Jamaican culture in addition to reacquainting himself with his sister and mother whom he had not seen for over a decade. The production was brought to life by the band members of the UWI Pop Society as they brilliantly assisted the actors whenever they performed an item. The production was so well received that after its week-long stint it performed an encore the following week.
Being true performers, the members of the UWI Pop Society are versatile in various genres including rock, reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, and alternative. Beginning at 7:00 pm, patrons should expect to be amazed by professional musical artistry and vocal expertise being emitted from a group of gifted students.
