Ja beat Canada in low-scoring game
DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann — Jamaica made it two wins in a row in the Supreme Ventures Sports Betting Cricket Festival at Port Rhoades Sports Club yesterday after scoring a hard-fought four-wicket win over Canada in a 50-overs game.
Set 149 to win, Jamaica lost six wickets before overhauling the modest score, thanks mainly to an unbeaten half-century, a run a ball 72, from opener Brenton Parchment, while man of the moment Andre Russell smashed a boundary-filled 19 with four fours at the end.
Earlier, Odean Brown took four wickets to restrict Canada after they lost the toss and were sent in to bat. Scores: Canada 148 all out off 41 overs; Jamaica 150-6 off 28.2 overs.
The series will continue tomorrow at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium with the first of two T20 double-headers involving the West Indies, Canada and Ireland.
Jamaica’s coach Junior Bennett, while admitting the team lost too many wickets “to ill-advised shots”, said they batted “much faster today” and hailed Parchment’s innings as “a mature one”.
Jamaica, who made one change to the team that beat Ireland by four wickets on Wednesday, bringing in Donovan Pagon for Andrew Richardson, got off to a disastrous start in their run chase, losing Wednesday’s centurion Danza Hyatt off the very first ball — caught in the slips by Harvir Baidwan off Henry Osinde.
Four runs later, he was joined in the pavilion by Donovan Pagon, also caught in the slips by Rizwan Cheema off Khurram Chohan, as the home team went to lunch at 28 for two with Parchment on 17 and Carlton Baugh Jnr on five.
Jamaica got off to a positive start in the post-lunch session, however, as they hit 10 runs off the first over after the break and raced to 50 off just 7.3 overs and brought up the 100 in 16.4 overs.
With wickets falling around him, Parchment hit 10 fours in his 160 minutes stay, sharing in two worthwhile partnerships — 61 with Baugh, who made 13, for the third wicket, and 44 with David Bernard Jnr for the fourth wicket.
Jamaican captain Tamar Lambert was out first ball, caught behind off Osinde, who had the best figures for Canada with three for 58 off eight overs.
Captain and wicketkeeper Ashish Bagai made a stylish 53 in Canada’s innings after they were sent in by Lambert, who won the toss for the second day, to prop up the innings.
Bagai, who went to the wicket with the score on 27 for two, put on 53 for the fourth wicket with Usman Limbada, who made 24, while Sunil Dhaniram, who made 15, was the only other batsman to get into double figures.
The right-handed Bagai hit seven fours in his inning, which lasted 88 minutes and faced 64 deliveries.
Odean Brown was the most effective Jamaican bowler, taking four for 33 off 10 overs with two maidens.
Bernard, who took the first two wickets in his first spell, finished with two for 23 off seven overs, while left-arm medium-fast Khrishmar Santokie also got two wickets for 34 runs off 10 overs with two maidens.
Wednesday’s bowling hero Andre Russell, who opened the innings with Bernard, and Bevon Brown took one wicket each, while teenager Kemar Marshall, who kept wicket in place of Baugh, effected two stumpings.
