Windies bow into ‘Crick Fest’ action today
FLORENCE HALL, Trelawny — The West Indies will make their entry into the Supreme Ventures Sports Betting Cricket Festival today when they take on ICC Associates Canada in the second game of two T20 games at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium here.
The series, which started last weekend with a drawn three-day game between Jamaica and Ireland, moved to St Ann earlier this week with Jamaica winning 50-overs games against the Irish and Canada and will have two days of action in Trelawny.
The festival will continue tomorrow with two more games — Jamaica play Canada, while the West Indies will face Ireland.
The West Indies team that arrived on the island Thursday evening, will use the games to continue their preparations for the ICC T20 World Championships that starts later this month.
In the absence of regular captain Chris Gayle, Darren Sammy has been named to lead the team that will see Trinidadian wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin as his vice-captain.
A release from the West Indies Cricket Board yesterday quoted Sammy as saying: “Being appointed to captain the West Indies team here in Jamaica is an honour for me. I will take it very seriously and look to do my best in this capacity. I see it as another chapter in my development as a player.”
Fast bowler Taylor and middle order batsman Sarwan are both coming off injuries. The 25-year-old Taylor broke down during the recent tour of Australia, while Sarwan had missed that tour after aggravating a back injury.
Today’s game is expected to provide the West Indies with good match practice as Canada, who went down by four wickets to Jamaica in a 50 overs game on Thursday, are not expected to provide much resistance.
Canada crumbled for 148 as only captain Ashish Bagai, who made a stylish, polished 53, showed any real application.
In the first game, Jamaica should get the better of Ireland again after a six-wicket win over them on Wednesday in St Ann.
Jamaica’s coach Junior Bennett had said last week that he would be including some young players in the team. He said Charlemont High wicketkeeper/batsman Kemar Marshall, who impressed in two brief stints in St Ann, and 21-year-old Nkrumah Bonner along with all-rounder André Bennett who has impressed with both bat and ball, could be included.
Bennett said Thursday that they would be taking this version of the game serious as they are getting ready for a regional tournament in July and these games will help their preparation.
The Irish has seen the Jamaica attack twice in the past week and this could help their confidence after making 227 on Wednesday.
Gary Wilson made 56, while captain and opening batsman William Porterfield made 43 then and will lead the Irish batting today.
