Unbeaten Ja whip T&T at U-16 tourney
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Jamaica stayed on course to recapture the Jean Pierre Memorial Caribbean Under-16 championship, when they dismissed Trinidad & Tobago 42-21 on Wednesday at the National Netball Stadium here.
Defending champions Jamaica had a slow opening quarter, where Trinidad and Tobago trailed them by 7-5.
Goal shooting starlet Thristina Harwood was not used in the shooting arc, but the Young Sunshine Girlz replaced Vanessa Jones from goal attack with Sade Ffrench for the second period, and stepped on the gas to close the first half ahead, 17-10.
The match was virtually over as a genuine contest at the end of the third quarter, as T&T failed to contain the rampant Jamaicans, who led 31-15 at the break.
The title-holders brought Shiquana Reid in at goal shooter to replace starter Trudianne Pennant, who netted 22 goals from 30 attempts, and returned Jones to goal attack, and cruised to victory over the final period.
For T&T, Jenice McIntosh had a perfect three-of-three at goal shooter, but was substituted at half-time for Samantha Wallace, who managed six from 12, while Kalifa McCollin at goal attack netted 12-of-17.
Yesterday, T&T were scheduled to play hosts Barbados in a match that could ultimately decide who finish second in the Championship, while Jamaica met St Lucia.
The St Lucians warmed up for the challenge with a 31-21 victory over Grenada in one of the other two matches in the main draw, and Dominica took advantage of what has become St Vincent & the Grenadines’ trademark last-quarter slump to win 23-22 after trailing for most of the game.
In the development tournament, Guyana came from behind in the first half to edge Cayman Islands, 35-24, in a sea-saw affair, and Bermuda stunned St Kitts, 31-20.
