August Town, Cavalier hunt Bell KO title
A new Claro/Kingston & St Andrew Football Association’s Jackie Bell Knockout champion will be crowned this afternoon following the playing of the final between Cavalier and August Town at the Drewsland mini-stadium, starting at 6:00 pm.
Cavalier, the KSAFA Super League champion, ousted defending Digicel Premier League (DPL) champion Tivoli Gardens in the semi-final after taking Waterhouse’s scalp in the quarter-final round in giant-killing run of form.
DPL contenders August Town, meantime, are hunting their lien on the coveted trophy and their assistant coach Dwight Morgan believes his team’s experience will see them through.
“We can’t take Cavalier lightly coming into this game because they beat two Premier League teams to get to the final,” he said.
“Plus we have some players that left us and went there, so they know some things about us, just like how we know some things about them too,”
Morgan added.
Cavalier have not played a competitive game over four weeks and Morgan thinks this will affect the Super League side.
“I know they will be in training because they have the (DPL) play-offs, so we are not taking them lightly, although it might give us the edge slightly,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cavalier’s player/coach David Laylor is confident that his team can rise to the occasion and upstage another Premier League ‘big boy’ and cop the trophy.
“This is a cup that we have never won, but this game will keep us focused… August Town is always a tough team irrespective of whom they play and although we (Cavalier) haven’t been playing for a while, it has given us an opportunity to rest some players and to work on some set-plays,” he said.
Meanwhile, a Masters and Celebrities Invitational team will go up against an Entertainer Invitational side in the opening game of the double header at 4:00. pm.
