The Guv claims Fontainbleu Trophy

THE Guv capitalised on a trouble-free run against the rails turning for home and motored on resolutely from then to capture the Fontainbleu Trophy Open Allowance feature by a neck at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Trained by Spencer Chung for owners HSV, The Guv was making his debut in Open Allowance company and ran 1,500 metres in 1:32.1 to register his third consecutive win in the seven-horse, field, three-year olds and upward.

Eight runners were originally declared, but Coleman’s Rock was a late non-starter.

To register his fourth win from five starts for the season with a half-length second-placed finish thrown in for good measure in the other, The Guv, sent off as the joint 9-5 favourite, along with Shanghai Pass, sat just behind the leaders as The Bomber, Shanghai Pass and Heart Of Gold took the field along at a comfortable pace.

However, with 600 metres remaining, jockey Paul Francis made a big move on the leaders with The Guv and dismissed both The Bomber and Shanghai Pass after settling down for the final 400 metre drive and came home with a neck to spare on the fast-finishing Heart Of Gold.

Heart Of Gold, a 5-2 bet, also made her move about the same time, but took the longest route home before throwing down her challenge on the outside four wide.

The Guv, in the meantime, was running true and straight along the rails, while Heart Of Gold lost precious minutes dismissing Shanghai Pass.

However, when she did find her best strides under Omar Walker she was gaining rapidly on The Guv, who had taken the lead, but this was all in vain as the wire intervened a neck away.

Shanghai Pass, ridden by claiming apprentice Doushane Gordon, was third 1 1/2 back with Hail The Genius, the mount of Aaron Chatrie, completing the frame at odds of 9-2.

The Guv, a four-year-old grey colt by Royal Minister out of Havasac (Ribyn Dancer), was bred by Stephen Chung, WP Valentine Chung & Howard Hamilton.

It was the colt’s sixth win from 15 career starts and he earned $429,000 as the winner’s share for a bankroll of $2,629,400 lifetime.
