MUMBAI, India (CMC) — West Indies suffered an injury scare yesterday when all-rounder Kieron Pollard appeared to damage his knee while batting for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League semi-final against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The right-hander, who smashed an unbeaten 33 from 13 balls, is one of the key players for the Windies’ upcoming campaign in the World Twenty20 Championship starting later this month.

Pollard continued his innings but was in obvious discomfort as he reached for his leg on several occasions. He made a belated appearance when Mumbai fielded but promptly snatched three for 17 to claim the Man-of-the-Match award.

He, however, played down the severity of the niggle, giving the assurance he would be fit for Sunday’s final.

“It’s pretty alright. After running the first couple of runs I kind of twinged my knee a bit, but I’ll ice it and have a couple of days with the physio and hopefully I’ll be okay for the final,” said the dashing right-hander.

“Hopefully we can go out there and play basic cricket, what we have been doing right though as a team and hopefully we can come out on top.”

Pollard is one of four players on the Windies WT20 squad who are campaigning in the cash-rich IPL. Captain Chris Gayle played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Dwayne Bravo has turned out for Pollard’s Mumbai while fast bowler Kemar Roach has been playing for Deccan Chargers, who will do battle in the second semi-final on today.

The WT20 runs from April 30 to May 16 with West Indies hosting Ireland and England in Group D of the preliminary round in Guyana.
