BoB and Bruno remove Rihanna from the top

Catch Di Riddim

Atlanta based rapper BoB and singer Bruno Mars packed enough muscle to remove the gigantic hit Rude Boy by Rihanna out of the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

The duo’s platinum selling single Nothin’ On You removed Rihanna from her five-week perch in the hot seat.

Nothin’ on You is the first single from BoB’s upcoming studio album BoB Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. The album was slated to be released on May 25, but due to the commercial success of his hit single, the album’s release date was pushed up to April 27. It is to be released under rapper TI’s Grand Hustle record label. It features collaborations with Lupe Fiasco, TI, Playboy Tre, Hayley Williams of Paramore, Rivers Coumo of Weezer; and Eminem.

BoB scores the top debut on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. His latest single Airplanes, featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore debuts at number 12. The track sold 138,000 downloads in its initial week of availability to debut at number five on Billboard’s Digital Songs chart.

BoB joins a growing list of acts from Atlanta, Georgia, USA who have topped the Billboard Hot 100. Others include former girl group Xscape, Usher, TLC, Jagged Edge, Outkast, Monica, and rapper TI.

Justin Bieber still standing tall

Teen pop idol Justin Bieber’s My World 20 continues to rule the roost on the Billboard 200 albums chart for a third non consecutive week. The set moved some 92,000 copies to fend off strong competition from MGMT’s second album Congratulations, which debuted at number two on the chart with 66,000 copies. MGMT’s debut album Oracular Spectacular peaked at number 38 on the Billboard 200 upon its release in 2007. Its debut then was fueled by sales of 17,000 copies in its opening week. To date, that album has sold 606,000 units.

Dubmatix and Prince Blanco cop Juno Award

Canada-based reggae artistes Dubmataix and Prince Blanco recently copped the Juno Award for Best Reggae Recording. The duo’s recording Gonna Be Alright won from a field of nominees which included Tanya Mullings (Breaking Up); Kim Davis (Show Me The Way); Carl Henry (American Dream) and Ghizlain Poirier and Face T (Wha La La Leng).

The Juno awards, which were handed out last weekend, are regarded as Canada’s equivalent to the US Grammy Awards. Rapper Drake and singer Michael Buble were the night’s big winners.

Wayne Marshall to release new video

Wayne Marshall has been missing from television screens for a while now. But fans of the singjay born Wayne Mitchell and who got married to singer Tami Chynn last year, should find momentary relief soon.

Marshall is teaming up with Ding Dong to shoot the video for their collaboration So Superfly. The video is to be directed by Road Block Films within the next week.

“Road Block Films and Ding Dong have a great chemistry and work relationship, so we decided to work with them on this video,” Marshall said in a recent interview with this column.

Additionally, Marshall is getting back into the swing of the things following the release of the recording Summertime Party which features Tha Professore. That track was produced by Icon of Nannyville Enterprise.

Marshall also completed tracks with producers Stephen McGregor, Washroom Entertainment, and Don Corleon.

An album of new recordings from Marshall is also in the works. “I’m working on tracks for the album and I finished recording some songs with Damian and Stephen Marley. There is a collaboration with Junior Gong and Tarrus Riley called Not Giving Up. It’s wicked,” Marshall revealed.

Gyptian lands on another Billboard chart

Gyptian is still making inroads on the Billboard charts. Not only is he still number one on the recently launched Digital Genres Reggae Chart, but his smash hit Hold Yuh has debuted at number fifteen on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart.

Meanwhile over on the R&B Hip Hop Singles & Tracks chart, Hold Yuh makes a mighty jump from 67 to land at number 51.
