Gay late addition to JII meet
AMERICAN sprinter Tyson Gay has been confirmed to compete in the 400 metres at the eighth Jamaica International Invitational Track and Field meet set for May 1 at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Gay, who won gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the 2007 World Championship in Japan, has decided to compete in the quarter-mile sprint in Kingston after posting the world’s fourth fastest mark of 44.89 seconds in the event last Saturday at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Florida.
According to the organisers of the IAAF Area Permit meet, Gay will face recently-crowned World Indoor gold medallist Chris Brown, 2009 World Outdoor bronze medallist Renny Quow of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the Jamaican pair of Ricardo Chambers and Jermaine Gonzales, in the one-lap event.
Gay is currently the world’s second fastest man in the 100m with 9.69 and third fastest in the 200m with 19.58.
Gay last competed at the Jamaica International Invitational in 2008, when he clocked 20.00 secs. However, the American missed last year’s staging due to an injury.
