Anglin Ready!
National Red Bull Street Style champion Aaril Anglin will have the trip of his life coming up next Wednesday.
He did 11 consecutive ‘around-the-worlds’ to win over the 800-plus spectators, fellow street stylers and judges at the National Red Bull Street Style Final on January 30 at Emancipation Park and will now represent his country in Cape Town, South Africa.
The world of street-style football is wild and unconventional, with few rules. Players have 20-second segments with the ball during three-minute rounds, after which they have to pass it back to the opponent. They get to wear anything they want, but they have to stand back and watch, unlike real football, where they could send their opponent flying to the ground.
Anglin, a native of the parish of St Thomas, is ecstatic about making it to the Word Final. “I have been following the competition and I am up against some really great competitors, but I’ve worked really hard to get here and this is a chance for me to show off more of Jamaica’s talent. I’m ready to get there.”
South Africa will provide some stellar backdrops for the quick-footed tricks of the freestylers. Competitions are scheduled near the much-photographed and iconic Table Mountain, while participants will also venture out to the notorious Robben Island. The athletes will have a practice day, two days of qualifiers, with the 28th being the final battles between the top 16.
Anglin has also been practising with a local dance group to give his repertoire an edge and ensure the Jamaican flavour is taken to the world once he performs. He is scheduled to arrive today, along with the other athletes, have one practice day, two days of qualifiers and then battle it out in an effort to make the top 16 on the final day.
