Gabiwitzo rebounds in Bigga Jamaica Oaks
Gabiwitzo turned the tables on her Jamaica 1,000 Guineas conqueror Al Fouzia with an emphatic 1 1/2-length victory in the 71st running of the $3.3-million Bigga Jamaica Oaks (Gr 1) race at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Ridden with greater intent and purpose on this occasion by overseas-based jockey Andrew Ramgeet and staying closer to the pace, Gabiwitzo ran 2,000 metres in 2:10.1 minutes to avenge a one-length defeat in the 1,000 Guineas a few weeks ago.
Trained by Fitznahum Williams for owner Sherman Clachar, Gabiwitzo was sent off as the 6-5 favourite in the 13-horse futurity event for native-bred, three-year-old fillies and Ramgeet left nothing to chance. From the off Ramgeet kept pace with the early leaders and settled in behind Eloping Emma, as Excellence was hustled up to lead passing the 1,600 metres poll.
Excellence, well supported at odds of 7-2 under Omar Walker, took them along behind fractions of 24.3, 49.4 1:15.3 with 1:42.3 for 1,600 metres during which time Gabiwitzo moved into second place, as Eloping Emma, with Andre Martin in the irons, disappeared to be among the back markers.
So on approaching the 800 metres pole Ramgeet went in serious chase of the leader but Excellence was running her heart out to hold the advantage and brought them into the lane for the final 200 metres before showing any signs of stress.
Looking for a clear run for the wire Ramgeet switched Gabiwitzo to the inside rails and along the way managed to change the horse’s lead, and this immediately propelled the eventual winner into the lead which she never gave up.
Al Fouzia, the 5-2 second favourite who was ridden by Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas in place of the unavailable Dane Nelson, challenged strongly on the outside after turning for home and was close enough entering the final 200 metres as the three fillies lined across the track as they drove for the wire.
However, she only managed to occupy third spot as a somewhat fading Excellence, after the winner had gone about her business, found extra in the final strides to the wire to hold the advantage for second money.
Regal Sensation, a 4-1 bet ridden by Shane Ellis, finished fourth with the 5-1 shot Herroyalhighness completing the High-Five under by Paul Francis.
Gabiwitzo, who is a bay filly by Pat N Jac out of Royal Grind (Artic Groom), was bred at Argyll Farms Ltd and was winning her first Classic race and her third win overall from eight career races. She earned $1,782,000 as the winner’s share for earnings of $4,097,700 lifetime.
