Melbourne grab rare win in Senior League
FLANKERS, St James — It took seven games, but last season’s beaten finalists Melbourne FC scored their first win in the Claro St James FA’s Senior League, beating Fogo United 1-0 in their second-round game at Flankers last Wednesday.
Melbourne, who lost in the final to Catherine Hall last season, got off to a poor start this season and are at the bottom of the tables in Zone B on four points, tied with Abes Academy.
Trevon Smith scored in the 27th minute for Melbourne as they avenged a first-round loss to Fogo, who stayed three points behind leaders Tomorrow’s People on 13.
Granville City moved into second place behind Tomorrow’s People after edging North Gully Ambassadors 3-2 at UDC.
Andrew Allen in the 28th and Jeffrey Saunders in the 39th gave Granville a 2-0 lead before Asorni Binger pulled one back in the 62nd.
Jovian Watson then restored Granville’s lead in the 72nd before an own-goal seven minutes later kept Gully Ambassador’s hopes alive over the final 11 minutes of the game.
In Zone A, Revelations stayed marginally ahead of Salt Spring United on goal difference after edging Salt Spring Roses 1-0 at Albion.
The teams are tied on 15 points, but Davion Senior’s 41st-minute goal gave Revelation the advantage on goal difference.
Salt Spring United gave up a 50th-minute lead to draw 1-1 with Barrett Town at Tucker.
Salt Spring took the lead through an own-goal, but Kemar Reynolds’ equaliser in the 67th shared the points.
In another game, Mountain Villa came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with last-placed Mt Salem at Wyndham.
Keno Williams gave Mt Salem the lead after 26 minutes, but Orain Braham scored in the 78th to equalise for Villa.
