St Catherine teams clash in Confed semis
SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine — The Spanish Town’s Prison Oval is expected to be brimming with excitement this evening as four St Catherine teams — Meadows, Naggo Head, Tru-Juice and Newlands — will square-off for a place in the finals of the South Central Confed Super League.
In the curtain-raiser at 3:00, debutants Meadows will look to continue their dream run when they go up against Tru-Juice, while in the second semi-final, former champions Naggo Head will take on Newlands at 5:30.
Both games are expected to provide much excitement, but the Meadows/Tru-juice match-up could well hog the spotlight.
The youthful Meadows outfit finished the preliminary phase as the most impressive team, as they are yet to taste defeat — winning 11 of their 14 games played while drawing the other three to take Group B on 36 points.
They were also the best team in attack and defence — scoring a league-high 29 goals while conceding only 10.
And while they will be entering today’s encounter as the favourites — having beaten their opponents 2-1 in their only meeting this season — coach Christopher Russell said they will not be taking anything for granted.
Tru-Juice finished as the runner-up in Group A on 26 points — winning seven of their 15 games, drawing five while losing three, with 19 goals for and 12 against.
Incidentally, their defeat to Meadows was their first of the season, but coach Felix Blackwood said the team have put that behind them and are ready win what is the most important game to date.
Meanwhile, the Naggo Head/Newlands should be no less exciting as both teams are yet to beat each other — drawing 0-0 in their cross-zone fixture.
The Portmore-based Naggo Head, who were relegated from the National Premier League in 2006/07 after just one season, recovered from a three-game winless streak at the start of the season to win Group A with 30 points, winning nine times, drawing and losing three times.
