Tough test for DPL leaders
LEAGUE contenders Harbour View and Tivoli Gardens have difficult away games against St Georges SC and Village United, respectively, as the Digicel Premier League (DPL) resumes today with a full slate of matches.
In other games, Waterhouse host Boys’ Town; August Town travel to Humble Lions; Arnett Gardens host Rivoli United and Portmore United take on Sporting Central at Ferdie Neita Park.
With four rounds remaining, leaders Harbour View with 67 points will be squarely focusing on the finish line.
They lead defending champions Tivoli Gardens by a point, and with their destiny in their own hands, Harbour View look good for yet another title.
But they travel to Lynch Park to face fourth-placed St Georges, on 47 points — a team they defeated twice from three starts this season.
Harbour View should feel confident of another victory, but it won’t be easy and the Donovan Hayles-coached outfit will have to pull out all the stops to win this one.
Buoyed by Harbour View’s 3-0 whipping of Village United last week, Tivoli Gardens, despite playing away, should confine Village to their second consecutive defeat in the fourth round.
Second-placed Tivoli, on 66 points, have beaten Trelawny-based Village three times this season and should make it four today.
The champions registered 4-0, 3-0 and 1-0 wins over Village who are sixth on 41 points and must win to stay in touch with the leaders.
The clash between third-placed Waterhouse (50) and fifth-placed Boys’ Town (45) will be the game of academic interest this week. Last week it was the St Georges-Boys’ Town encounter.
At the other end of the table the intense relegation battle continues with the six teams from seventh to 12th not safe as only three points separate them.
Former champions Portmore United occupy seventh spot on 39 points and know a win over 11th-placed Sporting, on 36 points, should be enough to secure top-flight football next season.
For Clarendon’s Sporting, who occupy the second relegation spot, the equation is simply, win at all cost.
Bottom team August Town, on 36 points, travel to eighth-placed Humble Lions, on 38 points, knowing they cannot afford to lose.
Both teams were involved in knock-out finals last week, with August Town capturing the KSAFA/Claro Jackie Bell crown, while Humble Lions lost 2-3 to Boys’ Town in the Flow Champions Cup All-Island.
August Town obviously will have a pep in their steps, especially with former national striker Fabian Dawkins finding form.
Ninth-placed Rivoli United (38) and 10th-placed Arnett Gardens (37) will lock horns in another crucial encounter.
Arnett have defeated Rivoli twice already and should be confident of securing another win and climb away from the bottom two.
The towering Newton Sterling, along with Kevin Wilson and Kevin King will be crucial to their victory charge.
Any form of win from any of these relegation-threatened teams could prove critical in the final four weeks.
