Humble Lion drub August Town in relegation battle
EFFORTVILLE, Clarendon — Newcomers Humble Lion FC scored a crucial victory in their push to avoid relegation from the Digicel Premier League when they eased to a 4-1 win over fellow promoted team August Town at the Effortville Community Centre yesterday.
Goals from Roberto Fletcher (eighth), Kimroy Davis (49th), Kevin Mighty (55th), and Loxley Thomas (89th) carried the beaten Flow Champions Cup finallist to their first win over August Town in four meetings this season.
They had lost the first two match-ups by 2-3 and 0-1 margins before earning 0-0 draw in the third, but this victory, they will tell you, could not have come at a better time.
They have now improved their tally to 41 points — six clear of the relegation zone and could well confirm their place in the league for next season with another win.
For August Town, the defeat is one that they will want to quickly forget, as they remain on 36 points at the foot of the table, but could still avoid the drop with three games left.
With just eight minutes gone in the game, Humble Lion went 1-0 up when Fletcher latched onto a through pass from Kimroy Davis to beat goalkeeper Devon Haughton with a well-placed shot to his left.
Both teams went on to create numerous chances, but had to settle for a 1-0 scoreline at the break.
Humble Lion restarted the game with pretty much the same energy they started the first with and went ahead from the penalty spot in the 49th minute, as Davis shot to the right of Haughton, after his defender had handled the ball in the box.
Six minutes later, Humble Lion put the game to rest, as Mighty rose above an August Town defender to head past a stone-dead Haughton.
With a three-goal cushion, Humble Lion seemed to have relaxed a bit, allowing August to come at them with Shaw and Theofore Bennett leading the charge.
