Springfield hammer Abassian 9-1 in Div One
BANKS, Clarendon — Christopher Donaldson scored four times and Wayne McGregor hit a hat-trick as Springfield shot back into contention for the quarter-finals of the FX Trader/Clarendon Division One with a 9-1 thrashing of Abassian at Waterwell on Tuesday.
At half-time, the game was already decided with McGregor (seventh, 30th) and Donaldson (10th, 22nd, 40th) giving Springfield a five-goal cushion.
Ian Graham (47th), McGregor (51st), Sircliff Thompson (60th) and Donaldson (72nd) added to the tally in the second half as Springfield completed the rout. Orando Heat scored a consolation in the 19th for Abassian.
Springfield thus leapfrogged three teams into second place in Zone One with 10 points — the same as Portland Cottage, but with a superior goal difference.
The defeat was Abassian’s third in five games and they are all but out of the race for a spot in the last eight. They are on six points, four adrift of third-placed Portland Cottage in sixth.
At Bodles, Free Town clipped Youths United 1-0 to move within point of Chatteau Progressive, who lead Zone Four with 13 points.
Free Town now need a further three points from their two remaining games to book a ticket into the round of eight, while Chatteau need only a point from their remaining fixture.
In the other Zone Four game, Moores United and Longville Park ended goalless at and are now out of contention for a quarter-finals berth.
In Zone Three, Harlem FC jumped into the lead with 12 points after they shared six goals in a 3-3 tie at Four Paths Community Centre.
