Salt Spring edge Mountain Villa in thriller
ROSE HALL, St James — Salt Spring United surged to the top of the points table in Zone A of the Claro St James Football Association’s Senior League on Thursday after outscoring Mountain Villa 4-3 at the Wyndham field.
In a exciting encounter, Mountain Villa came from 0-2 to tie the scores at 2-2, then tied it again at 3-3 before Kevin Vassell’s 88th-minute goal gave Salt Spring the win.
Salt Spring, who started slowly, inched past Revelation FC and Barrett Town by two points into the lead on 18 points from nine games.
Javian Bailey scored the first of his two goals in the 35th minute to give Salt Spring the lead, while the veteran Omar Clarke scored in the 42nd to make it 2-0 at half time.
Mountain Villa pulled one back early in the second half when Orain Bryan scored in the 49th minute before Dillon Davis tied up the scores in the 56th minute.
The game appeared heading for a draw before three goals in eight minutes changed the course.
Bailey scored his second goal in the 80th minute to give Salt Spring the lead, but Romaine Cameron’s penalty conversion two minutes later again tied up the score before Vassell’s late strike decided the game.
In another game played at the UDC field, Zone B leaders Tomorrow’s People were held to a 0-0 draw by North Gully Ambassadors.
With the point, Tomorrow’s People improved to 20 points from eight games, five more than second-placed Granville City, who have played a game more.
