C’Down end 2010 track season on high
CAMPERDOWN High ended their 2010 season on a high on Saturday night after winning the high schoolboys 4x100m race at the seventh annual Jamaica National Jamaica International Invitational meet at the National Stadium.
Camperdown, who were beaten badly by Wolmer’s Boys’ at the Penn Relays a week earlier, exacted some revenge by winning the event in a new meet record 40.27 seconds, erasing the 40.35 seconds set two years ago by a quartet from Calabar.
Holmwood Technical girls confirmed their superiority in the female equivalent with a convincing performance, while Jamaica College won the boys 4x400m and Edwin Allen girls running without several top stars, retained the girls Mile Relay event.
Reverting to the team they ran in the qualifying heats at the Penn Relays, Camperdown’s quartet of Ramone Waite, Bernado Brady, Jeffrey Josephs and Chevaughn Smith ran their fastest time of the season to hold off Wolmer’s Boys’, who were second with St George’s College third.
Wolmer’s Boys”, who ran without Dwayne Extoll, who stayed behind in the United States to make college visits, had a team of Odean Skeen, Julian Forte, A-Shawni Mitchel, while Andre Green anchored in 40.87 seconds, as St George’s College clocked 41.17 seconds.
Holmwood Technical repeated their win from the Penn Relays a week earlier, as 14-year-old Diana Johnson held off Herbert Morrison’s fast-charging Antonique Campbell to cross the line in 45.23 seconds, faster than the time they ran in Philadelphia.
Holmwood made one change to their line-up, as Nickeisha Beaumont came in, replacing Shericka Moulton, to lead off the team, handing over to Kedisha Dallas, who carried the baton to Yanique Ellington, while Johnson anchored.
The Montego Bay-based Herbert Morrison also made one change, as Ramona Burchell came in for Keneisha Stephen to run the third leg, joining lead off runner Kerifa Myers, Seidatha Palmer and Campbell, as their time of 45.36 seconds was also faster than the 45.81 seconds they posted for second in Philadelphia.
Edwin Allen High (45.76 seconds) and the Queen’s (46.42 seconds) repeated their third and fourth positions from the Penn Relays.
After a sub-par season where they won one relay event at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ Champs, in Class Three, was eighth in the 4x400m at Champs and failed to make an impact at Penn Relays. The Jamaica College team of Kavien Smith, Earl Grant, Juvan Gallimore and Tevin White ran a smart 3 minutes 16.33 seconds to bring the meet to a close.
White had to dig in on the anchor to hold off a fast charging Camperdown, who finished in 3 minutes 17.89 seconds, with Kingston College further back in third in 3 minutes 18.19 seconds.
The Edwin Allen High team of Sharnett Lewin, Amoy Blake, Desrine Montique and Sashana French retained the 4x400m event with 3 minutes 41.39 seconds ahead of Manchester High’s 3 minutes 43.56 seconds, while Herbert Morrison High overtook a fading Holmwood Technical about 10m from the finish line to get a podium position, finishing in 3 minutes 46.38 seconds.
