Prep school table tennis league serves off today
This year’s Oliver Decorating Prep School Table Tennis League is scheduled to begin today.
It is the 17th consecutive year of sponsorship on the calendar of the JTTA by Oliver’s Decorating Company Limited and will be run on a home and away format in the preliminary rounds. The winning school will receive the championship trophy and the league is being co-ordinated as usual by coach Sandra Riettie.
Six schools, with one school, Hillel, entering two teams, for a total of seven teams, have confirmed their participation. The other schools are three-time defending champions Portmore Missionary, former many times champions Vaz, Belair, Clarendon-based St Thomas More and St Cecelia, who are taking part for the very first time.
The seven teams will be divided into two groups, with three teams in Group One and four teams in Group Two. Group One will contain defending champions Portmore Missionary, Belair and Hillel II, while Group Two will contain Vaz, Hillel I, St Thomas More and St Cecelia.
Round robin play will take place in each group with the top two teams from each group advancing to semi-finals. Four boys and one girl make up a team and matches are scheduled for 2:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week. The final will be played on Tuesday, June 1 at Hy-Performance Centre.
On the day of the team finals, individual championships will also be contested to decide champion boy and champion girl; and schools who have not entered in the team event may enter players in these individual events. Last year’s champion girl, national Cadet representative Daneika Lawrence of Vaz will be defending her title, but a new champion boy will be crowned as last year’s winner Nadre Cephas of Portmore Missionary, is now in high school.
