H’View could clinch DPL title
HARBOUR View could clinch the Digicel Premier League (DPL) title with a win over archrivals Boys’ Town, and if champions Tivoli Gardens lose to St Georges SC in midweek action today.
Harbour View, on 70 points, lead Tivoli by four and with only two rounds remaining after today, a seven-point lead would be unassailable.
Harbour View host fifth-placed Boys’ Town (45) but can expect no favours from one of their fiercest rivals as they bid to increase their advantage over title-chasing Tivoli Gardens.
Last season, Boys’ Town’s coach Andrew Price said his team would not play dead and give the title contenders an easy ride, and he didn’t.
But the ‘Stars of the East’ have won two of their three meetings this season while drawing the other and should be quietly confident of securing yet another triumph, especially at home.
Second-placed Tivoli (66) lost ground in last week’s 0-2 defeat against Village United and will find fourth-placed St Georges (47) an equally hard nut to crack at Lynch Park.
Harbour View had to wait till the 89th minute to defeat St Georges last week and Tivoli will have to be at their best to secure maximum points and stay in the title race.
Anything less than a win and Tivoli’s chance of defending their title would take a serious nose-dive.
At the other end of the spectrum, the two teams which will be relegated could be made clearer after today, with six points separating the seventh and 12th-placed teams.
Cellar team August Town (36) cannot afford to lose to ninth-placed Rivoli United (39) when they clash at the Prison Oval. Likewise, Sporting Central (36) play against eighth-placed Humble Lions (41) in the Clarendon ‘derby’.
Former champions Arnett Gardens, lying in 10th place, just above the relegation zone with 38 points, must get at least a point in their encounter with seventh-placed Portmore United (42).
They will have the added advantage of knowing the earlier result between Humble Lions and Sporting Central, but only a win should be on the minds of Arnett.
Meanwhile, patrons will be allowed to watch the Waterhouse-Village United match — a game of academic interest only — free of cost at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium, it was announced by the club.
