Spartan edge Rio to clinch quarter-final berth
CHAPELTON, Clarendon — Spartan FC advanced to the quarter-final round of the FX Trader/Clarendon Football Association Division One with a game to spare after they came from behind to beat Rio United 2-1 in their top-of-the-table Zone Two clash at Clarendon College on Wednesday.
Tennison Brown gave Rio United a 1-0 lead on 24 minutes and they held on until the 64th minute when Neville Siddon fired home his first of two goals for the afternoon.
But just when it looked like Spartan were heading for their second consecutive stalemate, Siddon popped up with the winner nine minutes from time to give his team a place in the ‘quarters’ with 16 points.
They can only be overtaken by second-placed New Longsville FC (14 points), who earned three points from their forfeited game against Rock River.
New Longsville now need a point from their remaining fixture to clinch the final spot ahead of Rio United, who remained on 11 points after the loss.
Treadlight FC also joined Zone Three leaders Harlem FC into the last eight with a 1-0 win over Bucknor United.
Treadlight (14 points) trail Harlem by a single point, but will be aiming to top the zone when they close out their preliminary round fixtures tomorrow against Cherry Tree Gardens, who dropped out of the race after a 0-2 defeat to Original Paisley on Wednesday.
Zavia Cornwall and Gary Walter were on target for Original Paisley in the 17th and 49th minutes, respectively.
In Zone Four, the two qualifiers have also been decided as Chatteau Progressive (13 points) took the final spot behind zone winners Free Town FC (15 points), after third-placed Cross United failed to beat Moore United in their game on Tuesday.
In another game, Cockpit FC of Zone One suffered a setback in their qualification bid after they went down 0-1 to Coffalls FC and slipped into fourth place on nine points, but with two games in hand, could still clinch second place over Springfield (13 points).
