Marshall, Bonner shine in Super Cricket League
MELBOURNE, led by a six-wicket haul by Damion Jacobs, closed day one of the Jamaican Super Cricket League with a slight advantage over St Ann, despite Xavier Marshall’s attacking century yesterday.
The out-of-favour West Indies batsman cracked 105 off 129 balls in St Ann’s score of 259, while the Kangaroos will resume today’s last day on 182-5.
Marshall blasted eight towering sixes and five fours to push Melbourne on the backfoot and along with captain Orville Pennant (33), shared in a stand of 82 for the sixth wicket. Gregory Smith chipped in with 32 against the spin combo of Jacobs and Yannick Elliot.
Jacobs finished with 6-80 runs of 20 overs and three balls, while Elliot took 4-74.
In Melbourne’s turn at bat, openers Damion Henry and national representative John Ross Campbell sped to 59 before the latter was dismissed for 27.
Though Henry was eventually dismissed for 35, number three batsman Donavan Pagon stroked a patient unbeaten 71 and along with Tafari Williams (12 not out), kept the innings together after spinners Patrick Harty and Andre Dwyer threatened a middle-order collapse.
Harty ended the day with 3-57, while his left-arm unorthodox partner finished with two for 2-56.
At Kirkvine, St Catherine Saints dismissed Manchester for 178 as leg-spinner Gavin Wallace took 4-55 and Wayne Morgan 2-16. Zeniffe Fowler was the main scorer for the home team with 87. St Catherine will begin their reply today after rain-truncated proceedings on day one.
At STETHS, St Elizabeth were 44 without loss replying to Westmoreland’s 184 all out in another rain-affected fixture. Nickoy Samuels topscored with 47 for the visitors against Ainsley Goss (3-40) and Shawn Findlay (2-26).
In another match, national player Nkrumah Bonner showed his all-round worth with bat and ball to steer Kingston to a narrow advantage over Trelawny at that parish’s Multi-purpose Stadium. Bonner made 75 not out in his team’s 137 all out against Damion Allen’s 5-58, then returned to grab 4-21 to help restrict the Buccaneers to 111. Federick Hermitt also took four wickets.
