August Town first DPL relegation victim
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — It is official. August Town FC will be returning to the Claro/KSAFA Super League next season after they were relegated from the Digicel Premier League after they were spanked 3-0 by Sporting Central Academy in their battle at Brancourt yesterday.
Goals from Levaughn Williams, Francois Swaby and Jevaughn Watson condemned August Town to their 19th defeat of the season, which kept them on 36 points at the bottom of the 12-team standings and can only move to 39 with a game to go.
That would, however, be to no avail as their other relegation rivals have long past that margin.
Dwight Morgan, who assumed coaching responsibilities for the absent Onandi Lowe said indiscipline cost his team a place in top-flight football.
“We knew we had to come here today (yesterday) and win the game to have any chance of staying in the Premier League… but the discipline break down… and I just don’t think some of them want to play (as) we don’t train well (and) it has been an uphill task for the last seven games,” Morgan said.
Meanwhile, the victory means that Sporting, who moved to 40 points — irrespective of results elsewhere — will have another chance to stave off relegation when they go up against South Central rivals Rivoli United on the last day of the season.
Coach Vassel Reynolds said it is basically straightforward from here on.
“To a large extent I think destiny is still in our hands, so we just need to get those three points from our (last) game and see how it goes,” he said.
The home team would, however, go on to dominate the half and after numerous missed chances but soon went ahead courtesy of a sublime strike from Williams in the 33rd minute.
It therefore came as no surprise when Watson and Swaby combined to breach August Town’s defence for Sporting’s second goal in the 55th minute.
Some 14 minutes later, August Town’s exit from the DPL was confirmed as Watson arrived at the back post to stab home a Hughan Gray cross.
In another match, Portmore United clipped Rivoli United 1-0 at Ferdie Neita Park.
