Boys’ Town stop Tivoli
DETHRONED Digicel Premier League champions Tivoli Gardens crashed to a 3-4 defeat at the hands of 10-man Boys’ Town in their penultimate match of the season at Collie Smith Drive yesterday.
The visiting Tivoli team, which had taken the lead in the 12th minute through a spectacular 35-yard free-kick from national midfielder Camera Daley, had only themselves to blame after wasting a number of scoring chances in the seven-goal thriller.
Peter Keyes pulled the Red Brigades level in the 41st minute with a beautiful effort.
The team’s leading scorer netted his seventh of the season after controlling the ball inside the 18-yard box with his back to goal, before turning and firing into the roof of the net.
Kemmear Ricketts, Navion Boyd and Jameel Thompson wasted three good opportunities for Tivoli in the 43rd, 45th and 54 minutes, before Xavian Virgo gave Boys’ Town a 2-1 lead against the run of play in the 66th minute.
The defender dribbled past Thompson on the right flank, exchanged passes with Anthony Bennett inside the box, before beating Tivoli’s custodian Edsel Scott at the near post.
Tivoli responded and levelled the match at 2-2 in the 72nd minute through substitute Michael Spence, who tapped home from 10 yards after Boys’ Town’s out-of-sorts goalkeeper Philmore Crumbie failed to properly handle the initial shot.
A minute later, the industrious Bennett gave the home team a 3-2 advantage after collecting a loose ball in midfield to unleash a swerving shot from some 22 yards, which Scott had no chance of saving.
Bennett moved from hero to villain in the space of five minutes as he was ejected from the match by referee Wilverglen Lamey in the 78th minute. Bennett, who was yellow-carded for simulation, slapped the card from the referee’s hand and received a second yellow for dissent.
Tivoli seemed to have made good use of their one-man advantage as national striker Boyd ‘air pied’ the advancing goalkeeper Crumbie and beat two defenders inside the box to level the encounters at 3-3 in the 82nd minute.
However, it was Boy’s Town who had the last laugh as substitute Oneil McDonald netted the winner in the 90th minute.
In another game, Village United blanked St Georges SC 3-0 at the Elliston Wakeland Centre.
