Kangaroos skip to win over Cutters
A century from out-of-favour West Indies batsman Donavan Pagon and a 10-wicket haul from legspinner Damion Jacobs propelled Melbourne Kangaroos to an easy eight-wicket win over St Ann Cutters in the first round of the Jamaican Super Cricket League.
Pagon struck nine fours and two sixes in his 113 from 199 balls to push the home team from Saturday’s overnight score of 182 for five to 286 all out at the Melbourne Oval. This meant that they had secured a slim first-innings advantage of 27 runs against their St Ann rivals.
Left-arm unorthodox spinner Andre Dwyer took six for 116 off 31 overs and three balls, while Patrick Harty Jr grabbed four for 83 for the Cutters.
However, batting a second time, the St Ann team were routed for 103 as the spin combination of Jacobs and Yannick Elliot again wreaked havoc. Jacobs took four for 35 to finish with match figures of 10 for 115, while Elliot snared four for 44 to finish with eight in the match.
Captain Orville Pennant topscored with 28, while West Indies youth player John Campbell made 25 before both he and first-innings centurion Xavier Marshall (11) were dismissed by the Melbourne legspinner to leave St Ann reeling.
Set a target of 77, the Kangaroos blazed to victory in 11 overs thanks to Elliot’s 41 not out, despite losing openers John Ross Campbell (14) and Damian Henry (6) cheaply.
In another match at Kirkvine, Manchester secured first innings points from the visiting St Catherine Saints after restricting them to a first-innings score of 151 all out. Dean Morgan made 46, while national player Bevon Brown made an unbeaten 23 as Stephan Patterson and David Powell took three wickets each. Manchester had already scored 178 on Saturday’s first day, thanks to Zeniffe Fowler’s half-century.
At STETHS, St Elizabeth took first innings points in their rain-affected game against neighbours Westmoreland as they racked up 260 for six declared, thanks to Howard Powell (55) and Damion Ebanks (43). Westmoreland had already been dismissed for 184 on day one.
In a low-scoring encounter at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium, the Buccanneers lost to the visiting Kingston Kangaroos by 73 runs as Nkrumah Bonner finished with bowling figures of 10 for 55. After Kingston held onto a crucial 26-run first-innings advantage, Bryan Latore (51) and Bonner (34) helped them to muster 178 in their second innings. Kemar Allen took four for 45 to finish with nine wickets in the match for Trelawny.
Chasing 205 for victory, the Trelawny Buccaneers were bundled out for 131 as Bonner took six for 34, while Kenar Ross chipped in with two wickets.
