Milk River, New Bowens in Major League clash
NEW BOWENS, Clarendon — There could be a leadership change in the Clarendon Captain’s Bakery Major League as Milk River United and New Bowens FC will lock horns in what is expected to be a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash at the New Bowens Community Centre today at 3:00 pm.
Milk River lost their 12-match unbeaten run last week Thursday when they were stunned 0-2 by York Town FC at the York Town Community Centre, but continue to lead the 10-team standings on goal difference.
They are on 32 points, the same as New Bowens, who blanked Rock River 4-0 at Clarendon College, but have the upper hand with a +23 goal average to New Bowens’ +18.
Both teams share a win apiece in two meetings this season and will be looking to break the deadlock with a victory that could well decide the title race.
Milk River routed New Bowens 4-0 in their first-round match-up at Rest Primary on January 28, but New Bowens returned the favour with a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Monymusk Sports Club to crown themselves mid-season champions on March 18.
And though they are in second place, New Bowens, who won the Major League in 2005, should start favourites.
They are currently on a nine-match unbeaten streak which include eight wins and are undoubtedly the most impressive team in the return round — scoring 14 goals in four games, while conceding only three. Milk River have scored four less and conceded two more.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Dwight Young (49th and 69th minutes) hit a second half brace, as Longwood FC rallied to outscore Young Strikers 3-2 at the Longwood playing field.
Hicksroy Walters (15th) and Mian Williams (64th) netted for Young Strikers, while Demar Johnson (37th) also scored for Longwood.
Gimme-mi-bit FC also earned three points after Sanguinetti FC failed to show for their meeting at Gimme-mi-bit.
