Hope Bay off with a bang in Portland U-16
A Leighton Gray double helped propel new boys, Hope Bay United, to a 4-1 win over Norwich Community Club in the Portland Football Association Under-16 tournament at Canewood on Saturday.
In their first-ever competitive game, the Canewood Boys dominated a goalless first half and came out attacking in the second. Within two minutes, Rashawn Taylor broke the Norwich offside trap and was bundled over after a run into the penalty box. From the resulting spot-kick, Taylor sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to score.
Almost immediately after the kick-off, Taylor’s speed again left the Norwich defence trailing, but what looked a certain goal, was superbly palmed away by the goalie, but Leighton Gray followed to bury the ball deep into the net.
It was 3-0 in the 49th minute as Andrew Passley’s headed the into the top corner of the net.
With ten minutes left to play, Gray recorded his second goal of the game to make the score as he hit a speculative shot from some 30 yards out which bounced and lobbed the Norwich custodian.
