Jamalco, Mico inch closer to Open League ‘quarters’
MINERAL HEIGHTS, Clarendon — Defending champions Jamalco and newcomers Mico University College are just a win away from confirming their places in the quarter-finals of the Clarendon Netball Association/Jamalco Open after notching their third consecutive win at the Mineral Heights Courts on Sunday.
Jamalco defeated Denbigh B 38-8 to sit atop Zone One with maximum nine points, along with Optimist, who also mined victory number three when they stopped Glenmuir High 30-23.
Both teams can now seal quarter-final berths with victories next Sunday when they go up against cellar teams Mack Rebuilders and Humble Lion, whose match-up on Sunday was not played. The win would give them an unassailable six-point lead with one match to play.
In Zone Two, leaders Windalco also moved closer to a spot in the last eight after they managed to stave-off a resilient Hayes All-Stars 31-23 in preserving their three-point advantage over Holmwood A and Slipe PYC, who had comfortable wins over Ricam and Foga Road.
Slipe PYC whipped Foga 36-9, while Holmwood A beat Ricam 28-8 to share second place on six points.
Meantime, Mico and Denbigh A with nine points each, continue to wrestle for the top spot in Zone Three with the round’s widest margins of victories.
Denbigh A romped to a 53-8 triumph over Gravel Hill, as Mico thrashed Longville Park 48-13, while third-placed Holmwood B (six points) flogged Toll Gate 42-27 before tagging Longville Park 35-26 in a reschedule game.
