Village swamp St Georges 3-0 in DPL
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Teenaged striker Dino Williams scored twice as Village United beat St Georges Sports Club 3-0 in their Digicel Premier League fourth-round game played at the Elliston Wakeland centre on Sunday.
The former Green Pond High striker took his tally to seven on the season, despite missing the first round, scoring in the third and 44th minutes, as Delroy Ellis’ free-kick in the 40th minute accounted for the other goal.
This was the first win for the Trelawny team over St Georges after they lost in the first round and drew the other two games.
It was also the second win for Village in the fourth round, as they had also beaten outgoing champions Tivoli Gardens 2-0 two weeks ago at the same venue.
In a game of mostly academic interest, since neither team can be relegated, Village looked much more purposeful and except for brief periods in the second half, the St Georges players appeared to be going through the motions.
Williams shot Village in the lead in the third minute, as before the St Georges team could settle, he beat goalkeeper Ralston Robinson to his left at the near post with a low shot.
Village created the majority of the chances and after two missed opportunities they scored twice again in the last five minutes of the first half.
Ellis’ free-kick from just on the edge of the penalty box after Williams was fouled, flew past Robinson and into the top of the goal in the 40th minute.
Four minutes later Williams got his second when he caught the St Georges defence flatfooted, rounded the advancing goalkeeper and shot into a wide-open goal.
Both teams had good chances to score in the second half, but the visitors had the two best only to fail to get past a dogged Village United defence.
