Milk River, New Bowens excite in 2-2 draw
NEW BOWENS, Clarendon — Milk River United are still the leaders of the Clarendon Captain’s Bakery Major League following an exciting 2-2 draw with New Bowens FC in their top-of-the-table return-round clash on Monday at the New Bowens Community Centre.
The result saw both teams inching to 33 points at the top of the standings with Milk River ahead courtesy of a five-goal advantage over New Bowens.
And with five games remaining in the season, it is the team which makes the least mistakes against its mid-table opponents from here on, that will lift trophy and advance to next season’s South Central Confederation Super League.
In the day’s other game, York Town FC edged past Sunnyside FC 3-2 at the York Town Community Centre.
At New Bowens, the homesters, who are looking to return to the Super League from which they were relegated in 2006, shot into the lead after just four minutes when Leon Callaghan, a former Garvey Maceo midfield general, robbed the Milk River goalie of the ball then tapped in from an acute angle.
Milk River grabbed the equaliser in the 29th minute through Shanneil Russell, who scrambled home after the New Bowens defenders failed to deal with a right-sided cross.
And moments later, they were 2-1 up, as another defensive blunder from New Bowens resulted in a penalty, which Jameal Forrester slotted home for his 10th goal of the season.
But, looking to salvage at least a point from the game, New Bowens went into attack mode after the restart and found the equaliser in the 74th minute, also from the penalty spot, as Callaghan netted his league-leading 13th goal.
