St Andrew, Mona claim U-16 hockey titles
ST Andrew High, buoyed by a brilliant attacking brace from Kamille Griffiths, defended their title, while Mona High dethroned Munro College in the finals of the ISSA/JHF Under-16 School League at Mona yesterday.
The Dr Michelle Holt-coached St Andrew defeated Alpha Academy 2-0, while Mona kept their heads in a penalty shoot-out to down Munro College 3-2.
Griffiths, putting on a show of attacking skills, struck in the 10th minute to put St Andrew ahead. With Alpha playing flat and seemingly out of ideas, Griffiths sealed the issue in the 29th.
On both occasions, Griffiths darted down the right flank before crashing the ball past Alpha goalkeeper Kadeja Gordon.
“We knew who their key players were and decided that they were not going to play… and we were prepared to sacrifice Demi (Nicholson) in defence because we thought that Kamille with a lot of space up front could take on any defence.
“We had our full team and in the only game we lost (against Alpha) in a very long time, we didn’t have our goalkeeper and we didn’t have our main defenders,” she added.
Alpha defeated St Andrew 2-1 in a group match last month and held the psychological advantage going into the final.
Alpha’s coach Kirk King said his team “came out flat, they didn’t have any movement and in some instances Andrews did well to counteract most of our strengths”.
“I’m very disappointed, I was expecting a better performance from my team. It’s the first bad game from the start of the season,” he noted.
In the boys final, with Munro missing key senior players such as captain Amin Miller, Shanovan DeSouza and Warren Rose, Mona were determined to take advantage.
Though Munro’s Levar Dunchie, a thorn in the Mona defence, was unfortunate not to score, his opposite number Johnardo Edwards fought all the way.
Regulation and extra time failed to separate the teams and it was left to the dreaded penalty shoot-out to determine the outcome.
Jason McPherson and Nye Lyn scored the first and fourth penalty shots for Munro, while Phillip Dawson and Obrian Hayden converted the third and fourth penalties for Mona to tie the score 2-2 after the first five attempts.
When McPherson returned to miss his penalty in the second round, Dawson was on target for Mona to clinch victory.
