Danielle My Girl upsets on midweek card
NINETY-FOUR-TO-ONE chance Danielle My Girl defied punting logic by winning the $528,000 W “Billy” Pick Memorial Cup feature by a length-and-a-quarter at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.
Bred as a sprinter and ridden by claiming apprentice Arthur Budhu, Danielle My Girl ran 2,000 metres in 2:12.3 to surprise her more accomplished rivals to open her winning account for the season after eight starts in the field of seven for mid-range claimers $450,000 – $400,000 three-year-olds and upward.
Trained by Ryan Darby for owner Alden J Francis, Danielle my Girl, the speediest in the line-up and attempting the distance for the first time, took charge of proceedings from early by hopping to the front from the off and although headed briefly in the final 200 metres by Rifleman under Paul Francis, she found extra and came away for the colossal win.
Rifleman, who tracked the leader at a safe distance appeared a real danger, turning for home on the outside and looked to have every chance leaving the quarter bend and in fact pointed but only briefly but sensing danger on her outside the young apprentice teased Danielle My Girl with two cracks of the whip and the plucky seven-year-old chestnut mare kicked on to come away to have a length and a half to spare on the 9-5 favourite.
Lucky Eddie, a 13-1 betting option who progressed from mid-pack, was third — ridden by Richard Mitchell — with Toekas partnered by claiming apprentice Aaron Chatrie completing the frame at odds of 73-1.
