All set for DPL play-off series
IT’S ready, set, go for the 2010 Digicel Premier League (DPL) play-offs after Eastern Confederation Super League winners Benfica FC secured the last remaing spot.
They now join KSAFA champions Cavalier, South Central winners Meadows FC and western kingpins Reno FC in the play-offs set to kick-off on Wednesday.
In the opening games, Reno entertain Cavalier at the Frome Sport Complex and Meadow tackle Benfica at Prison Oval.
Based on history, Reno will start favourites in the group; however, they could have a difficult time enforcing that favourite tag against the other challengers.
Reno were relegated from the top-flight DPL last season but look set to make their return under former national technical director and Reno stalwart Wendell Downswell.
With players like former national player Evon Taylor, Fabian Blake and Nyron Davis remaining after the team was demoted, Reno have the benefit of experience.
With additions like Sheldon Bryan, Craig Foster, Martin Blake and Tremaine Perry, the Westmoreland outfit looks a tough side to stop.
Reno finished their league unbeaten, winning the title with a game to spare and beating former Premier League rivals Seba United into second place by five points.
KSAFA representatives Cavalier also seek to make their return to top-flight football after a 10-year absence.
The Corporate Area champions are always higly fancied in these play-offs and the black-and-white boys are expressing total confidence going into the two-week tournament.
The Lamar Morgan-coached team will pin their hopes on topscorer for the past two seasons Locksley Thompson, along with Donovan Alvaranga, Gee Daley, Fabian Swaby and veteran premiership campaigners such as Oneil Morrison, Richard Hoo and player/assistant coach David Laylor.
St Catherine side Meadows surprised many by topping the South Central competition and are keen on keeping their impressive record intact.
The Christopher Russell-coached team made their debut in Super League this season and are now looking to emulate Spanish Town counterparts Arlington, who made it to the DPL in their Super League debut season a few years ago.
Russell’s team will come into the play-offs as one of three unbeaten teams and players like Dayne Planter, Orville Newell, Julian Francis and Kenroy Whyte are aiming to maintain that proud record.
Benfica also finished their league unbeaten and are full of confidence entering the play-offs.
The St Ann club was a cut above their opponents in the Eastern Confederation and have high expectations ahead of the qualifiers.
They have a class player in midfielder Craig Gordon, and boast premiership players in Lacon Brissett (formerly of Village United) and Brian Wollaston (who played at Waterhouse and St Georges).
The true depth of the Lime Hall-based club is not really known, but they expect to do well and hope to become the first Premier League representative from the parish since Black Stars in 1994.
