Bridgmohan makes late rally to take Matt Winn Stakes
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CMC) — Jamaican jockey Shaun Bridgmohan captured the $100,000 Matt Winn Stakes yesterday, when he rode the three-year-old colt Thisskyhasnolimit to victory at Churchill Downs.
The 30-year-old Bridgmohan produced a furious late rally to overpower hot favourite Cool Bullet and reach the finish three quarters of a length clear in a time of one minute, 22.29 seconds.
It was the first outing for the colt after a near six-month break because of injury. In his last outing, he finished sixth to eventual Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last November.
“I had a wonderful trip. My horse ran good,” Bridgmohan told local media.
“He’s a real nice horse and he’s been training really well. I did expect that type of effort.”
Going off at 2-1 in the seven furlong trip, Thisskyhasnolimit was kept in hand throughout the first half of the race with Privilaged and Southern Danger making the early running.
Bridgmohan took aim at the leader approaching the furlong marker and then made a strong challenge with a furlong to run.
Thisskyhasnolimit and Cool Bullet then locked horns in the home stretch with Bridgmohan using a left-handed whip to get the colt to the post first.
