Beacon take the spoils after violence-hit final
Beacon football club are the 2009-2010 St Elizabeth Wray and Nephew Major League champions.
They were awarded the title in the boardroom during an emergency meeting of the St Elizabeth Football Association’s executive on May 4. This followed the violence-hit aborted second-leg final between Beacon FC and Holland Police Youth Club at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) earlier.
The teams had played to a 0-0 stalemate in the first leg a week earlier at the same venue. In the second leg, Beacon earned a 1-0 lead as a result of a disputed penalty
when referee Dwight Royal was forced to end the contest with 10 minutes of scheduled time remaining as a result of disorder.
Ugly television pictures showed at least one player with blood streaming from his face after being hit by a missile.
The St Elizabeth FA ruled that Beacon FC be awarded maximum points with three clear goals and that Holland PYC be suspended from all football activity in the parish
until they face the disciplinary committee.
The FA also ruled that Holland’s coach Lance Morgan be fined $10,000. He was referred to the disciplinary committee for further sanctions, while 10 of his players
have also been summoned to face the disciplinary committee.
Beacon were also fined $10,000 for missile throwing and coach Gary Brooks was slapped with a $5,000 fine.
However, the champions will pocket $150,000 and the Wray and Nephew trophy and will go on to represent the parish next season in the South Central Super League.
