Buckley second best in 400m hurdles in Brazil
BEIJING Olympic 400-metre hurdles finalist Markino Buckley was the top Jamaican performer at the Grande Prêmio Rio/Caixa de Atletismo meeting in Fortaleza, Brazil
on Sunday.
The Stephen Francis-coached athlete returned 49.51seconds to finish second in the one-lap obstacle behind Andres Silva of Uruguay, who clocked 49.49. American Justin Gaymon placed third in the event with 49.90secs.
It was Buckley’s second outing of the season, after he posted 49.37 at the Jamaica International Invitational on May 1 in Kingston.
The next best-placed Jamaican was World Championships 4x100m relay medallist Simone Facey, who clocked 11.74secs to finish fourth in the 100m won by Zang Milama Rudy of Gabon in 11.54. 2006 Commonwealth Games 100m champion Sheri-Ann Brooks, who was listed to compete, did not start.
Ainsley Waugh of the MVP Track Club finished sixth in the men’s equivalent in 10.59secs. The event went to Leroy Dixon of the USA in 10.46 followed by Emmanuel Callander of Trinidad and Tobago 10.47 and France’s Martial Mbandjock (10.55).
Derrick Atkins of The Bahamas, who won the silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan placed fifth in the race with 10.57secs.
Korine Hinds, a 3,000-metre steeplechace specialist, returned 2 minutes 04.18secs for fifth place in her less-fancied 800m. The event went to Meskerem Assefa of Ethiopia in 2:03.10.
