Five-star Lamey propels Waterhouse past St Georges
Kevin Lamey hit five goals to be the joint leading goal scorer on 18 goals as Waterhouse ended the 2009/2010 Digicel Premier League season on a high with a 6-1 drubbing of St Georges Sports Club at Drewsland on Sunday.
Waterhouse, who had already secured third place in the overall standings, moved on to 60 points with the victory, while St Georges remained on 50 points in fourth place.
The game was of academic interest only, as no matter which team won, the result could not change their placings.
However, with Waterhouse fielding a cadre of their Under-21 players without Darren Mattocks, Kenardo Forbes, Andre Clennon and Theo Brown, the visitors were made to work a little harder and 22 minutes into the first half they went a goal down as defender Jermaine Taylor beat his own goalkeeper Romaine Bowers from close up while trying clear a dangerous pass from Adrian King to Jonathan Williams out of harm’s way.
Four minutes later Lamey registered his 14th goal of the season after poking home an accurate leftsided cross from Stephen Williams. Lamey scored again in the 28th and 39th minutes for Waterhouse to lead 4-1 at the break after St Georges had scored a goal of their own in the 44th minute through Damion Harwood.
Lamey again found the net in the 49th and 70th minutes to draw him alongside Devon Hodges who’s also on 18 goals, but the Waterhouse top marksman muffed three other reasonably good chances of scoring to become sole leader.
Winning coach Geoffrey Maxwell thought it was a good note on which to end the season, “but it also points out what could have been had we not squabbled in the third round after losing the first five games of the first round and then winning the second round to be a mere two points off the leaders”.
