Greater Portmore High top 15th MultiCare Track & Field Champs
Greater Portmore High School emerged champions at the 2010 MultiCare Foundation’s Track & Field Championships which was held at the GC Foster College last Tuesday.
Greater Portmore High amassed 172 points to win the 15th staging of the event ahead of Windward Road Primary & Junior High, which scored 160 points and Haile Selassie High, which finished third with 142 points.
Greater Portmore High topped the male division with 108 points and picked up another 64 points in the female category, Windward Road Primary & Junior High led in the female division with 84 points and collected 76 points in the male events, while Haile Selassie High took an even 71 points in both the male and female categories.
Intermittent periods of heavy rain at the GC Foster College venue caused the cancellation of the official opening ceremony, but was not enough to dampen the spirits of the over 500 boys and girls who gave sterling performances on the track.
The meet was the culmination of months of training by the young athletes from the 31 MultiCare-assisted schools in East, West and Central Kingston and Greater Portmore, who competed in sprint, middle-distance and relay events, in four classes — 10-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18 and an open category.
The top 10 finishers were Greater Portmore High on 172 points, Windward Road Primary & Junior High on 160, Haile Selassie High on 142, Calabar Primary & Junior High on 89, Dunoon Technical High on 75, Donald Quarrie High and 62, Kingston Technical High on 54, Waterford High on 47, Harbour View Primary on 35, Duhaney Park Primary on 33.
