Village grab late equaliser at Collie Smith Drive
VILLAGE United rallied to earn a 1-1 draw with all-island knockout champions Boys’ Town at Collie Smith Drive as the 2009/2010 Digicel Premier League season drew to a close on Sunday.
The result means Boys’ Town end the season in fifth position on 49 points, while Village stayed sixth with 48 points.
Michael Campbell gave the ‘Red Brigade’ the lead in the 65th minute after his teammate Peter Keyes had wasted no less than four easy scoring chances in the first half.
Campbell rose high at the back post to head past Village’s custodian Elvis Hart after Asrick Samuels had floated in a cross from the right flank.
The visitors, who had not created many scoring chances, netted the equaliser in the 89th minute after a defensive error by Boys’ Town.
Striker Dino Williams tapped in from 10 yards after goalkeeper Philmore Crumbie fumbled a cross supplied by Delroy Ellis from the left side.
Boys’ Town had only themselves to blame for not coming away with maximum points after substitute Dean Thompson missed two easy chances in time added.
Playing at right back, Boys’ Town’s back-up goalkeeper Kirk Porter served up a perfect cross, which Thompson sent crashing off the crossbar in the 90th minute, before booting another effort over the bar from eight yards after being played through by Oneil McDoanld.
The 1-1 result left coach Andrew Price in a bad mood as his team missed the opportunity to finish the 12-team league in fourth spot.
“I’m disappointed. Every time I play at home I want to win games and my team gave a lacklustre performance today (because) we got numerous chances and didn’t put them away and it highlights our entire season,” Price told the Observer. “We are going to have to definitely work on that for the season to come and look at ‘blooding’ some youngsters and getting some new people in the squad who do some finishing for us, because finishing has definitely let us down this season,” Price added.
The Village coach Cassman Williams, though satisfied with winning a point away from home, also indicated that his team needs to be strengthened ahead of the next season.
“I think we need players to strengthen our outfit because we are actually short in terms of players really. We need defenders and midfielders, as well as another striker,” Cassman said.
